She is new to you; you are new to her. You haven’t spoken this much before. But now that you are sitting face to face, it is highly important to have good conversation. If you cannot talk well, all your other qualifications pale in comparison.
Here are 5 important tips that you need to keep in mind during your first date conversation.
1. You have to strike the fine balance between talking about yourself and asking about the other person. It should never be biased in one direction. The best way is to say something about yourself and then ask about something similar from the other person. For instance, you could say, “I love to travel. I’d been to Italy this year with my family. What about you? Do you have the travel bug in you?”
2. Don’t be too tight-lipped in giving out information about yourself. Sometimes we act too reticent when asked personal questions, but that may not be a good idea when you are conversing during your first date. If you are not comfortable with a topic, you can politely turn it over to something else, but don’t shoot it down.
3. Listen. This is very important. When your date is saying something about himself or herself quite enthusiastically, you shouldn’t cut them in between. The politically correct thing to do is to hear them out and even ask some interesting questions.
4. As far as possible, don’t speak about other people much during your first date. Speak about yourselves and about the people associated with you. If you have a common friend, they could make a good topic about it for a while.
5. Here’s an important tip—never, never give rock-solid opinions or criticism about anything during your first date conversation. The best thing to do is to keep the conversation neutral. If you suggest you hate something completely—even if it is just a music video—but if it turns out that the other person loves it, it could be a faux pas you won’t be able to easily get out of.
